Student Life

Many South African students are the first in their families to attend university. While this achievement is often celebrated, the reality can be far more complex.

For first-generation students, university represents more than academic study. It often carries the hopes and expectations of entire families. Students must navigate unfamiliar systems, financial pressures, and academic demands without the guidance that previous generations may have received.

The transition can be overwhelming. Balancing coursework, financial responsibilities, and family obligations requires resilience that is rarely acknowledged in formal curricula.

Yet these students frequently develop remarkable adaptability and determination. Their journeys highlight both the opportunities that higher education creates and the challenges that remain within the system.

As South Africa seeks to expand access to higher education, understanding the experiences of first-generation students becomes increasingly important.
